Practice round for the Sandy Amateur this Saturday Today I left the blogging and hit the course at 9:30am. The course was closed due to a tournament though so I came back later and tee’d off with some buddies at 1pm. I chose to play the black (tips) tees, though my league play/scores have dictated that

Adams Releases Pro Black CB1 Irons

April 19, 2010 by Editor

For years, Adams Golf has quietly been making hybrid clubs enjoyed by some of golf's best players. Anthony Kim, Vijay Singh, and Jim Furyk, as well as other top pros, have all used one in recent years. Now, with the release of the Idea Pro Black CB1s, Adams is hoping that accomplished players will also consider its irons, too. Forged from 8620 carbon steel, the Pro Black CB1 irons have subtle perimeter weighting, but a thin topline and sole, which should be pleasing to the eye for golfers who like to shape the ball. In a release, Chip Brewer, CEO and President of Adams Golf, said: “Originally developed exclusively for our professional staff players like Tom Watson, the overwhelmingly positive comments about the feel and performance of the CB1s from the tour inevitably led us to make this set an integral part of the successful Idea family of irons. This stealth-looking set has already received high marks from golf enthusiasts plugged into the online community so we look forward to bringing the CB1s to low-handicap golfers everywhere who appreciate the control and workability of this forged set of irons.” The standard set of CB1s will come with eight clubs (4-GW), and all will have grooves that conform to the new USGA standard for competition. Players can choose between two stock shaft options, Rifle Project X Flighted ($899, suggested retail) or Mitsubishi Rayon Javin FX i95 graphite shafts ($1,099, suggested retail). Inside the Five-Piece TaylorMade Penta Golf Ball

CHASKA, Minn. — Last week I told you that Sergio Garcia and Retief Goosen will be using TaylorMade's yet-to-be-released Penta golf ball here at Hazeltine . From the outside, a five-piece ball looks identical to a two-, three- or four-piece ball. They're all round, white and covered with dimples. Don't try this at home, but if you cut a few Pentas in half, this is what you'll see. Starting at the far right, the four interior pieces are: the black core, which is solid; the gray inner mantle layer; the red middle mantle layer; and the thin, light-red outer mantle. The sliver-thin, white urethane cover is the fifth layer. Also See: – 2009 GOLF.com Ball Guide – See and Buy TaylorMade Balls – PGA Tour Winning Bags

Lucas Glover, Stewart Cink preparing for big equipment changes

AKRON, Ohio The winners of the 2009 U.S. Open and British Open have a lot in common when it comes to equipment. Lucas Glover and Stewart Cink both use a Nike SQ Sumo Tour driver, as well as the same Nike prototype putter and Nike CCi Forged irons. But Glover told me Tuesday on the driving range at Firestone Country Club that the grooves in the those irons will become non-conforming once the new groove rules go into effect on January 1, 2010. “I just don't understand it,” he said. The gentle shaking of his head and look in his eyes made it Glover is frustrated by upcoming changes. “We've been progressive for a hundred years, and now we're backing up 20. I'm a little confused by it, but it's not my decision.” Both Glover and Cinklike most players on the PGA Tourhave started the testing process to learn how the new conforming grooves will affect their game. During the week of the Crowne Plaza Colonial in May, both Glover and Cink made trips to The Oven , Nike's club testing and development facility in Ft. Worth, Texas. “There's not much a difference when hitting shots from the fairway,” Cink told me on Tuesday. “But you definitely loose a lot of spin from the rough.” After he completed the testing in May, Cink wrote on Twitter , “New grooves next year mean 10% less spin from the fairway and 60-70% less spin from the rough with short irons. Players will use a softer ball I believe.” Cink, who switched this season to the Nike One Tour D ball from the Nike One Black ball, told me that he'd likely need to make another ball change next season too. So much for a quiet, restful off-season for these major champions. (Photo by Stewart Franklin/Getty Images)
