Jason Day’s Split Iron Set and Two Pitching Wedges

FORT WORTH, Texas On Sunday evening, when TaylorMade reps sent me a list of the clubs that Jason Day used to win the Byron Nelson Championship , I thought they'd made a mistake. The list said that Day had both a TaylorMade R9 TP pitching wedge AND a 48 TP wedge with xFT . Typically, a pitching wedge has about 47 of loft, and while pros sometimes have unique clubs in their bag, I couldn't think of a reason why a player would want two clubs with almost exactly the same loftespecially now that pros have the new USGA-conforming grooves. The clubs should produce almost the same shots. On Monday I went to the TaylorMade's Tour van here at Colonial Country Club to ask the men who build Day's clubs if I'd been sent incorrect information. Nope, it turns out that Day does carry both clubs in his bag. However, I was told that Day's pitching wedge has been de-lofted to 46, creating a 2 gap between the two clubs. My next stop was the media center where Day was talking to reporters. I began our conversation by asking him why he chooses to play a split set of irons, going with TaylorMade Tour Preferred long-irons (3-5) and R9 TP mid- and short-irons. Watch the video below for Day's thoughtful answer. Next I asked him about the wedges. “I hit my pitching wedge 140-145 yards, my 48 130-135 yards, my sand wedge (54) 110-115 yards and my lob wedge (60) 90-95 yards,” Day said. “I like to play two shots with every wedge. If I have 130 yards I'll usually hit a 48 wedge shot to the pin because it goes higher, but I could hit a half-shot with my pitching wedge if I want to hit it lower.” So rather than creating uniform gaps with his four-wedge set-up based on distance, Day thinks more in trajectory options, visualizing the ideal shot and then picking with the club and swing-length combination that will produce it. “If the pin is at the front of the green and there is a bunker there, then I will want to bring the ball in high with the 48,” he told me. “But if the pin is in the back then I can hit it lower and let the ball release to the pin with the pitching wedge.” Crafty stuff from a guy who's just 22. Thanks to Vnello from The Golf Space for the tip on the new craze in caddies. Fluff and Steve Williams better watch out, or they may soon be replaced by llamas. Sherwood Forest Country Club’s caddy shack is full of llamas, who carry bags for $40. The players like the llamas and their “calm” demeanor. It

Ryan Moore’s Winning Clubs

Endorsement contracts can be very lucrative, and golf fans are used to seeing players, their bags and their apparel covered in logos and insignias. Often these contracts pay professional players a flat rate for using a certain number of clubs, and contain incentive clauses, which can add tens of thousands of dollars to the player's bank account if he wins a PGA Tour event. Win a major and those numbers go up a lot more. But Ryan Moore, in an attempt to get back to his pure love of the game, walked away from several endorsement deals before winning the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.,Sunday. Forsaking the dollars, Moore plays the clubs he prefers, including his S59 irons, which are the same clubs he used to dominate fields in college and amateur events about five years ago. Here is a complete list of the clubs Ryan Moore used to win the 2009 Wyndham Championship: DRIVER: Adams Speedline 9032LS (8.5 ) with Graphite Design Tour AD Quattro Tech 65 shaft FAIRWAY WOODS: Adams Speedline 9032 Ti (14.5 ) HYBRID: Adams Idea Pro Gold (18 , 22 ) IRONS: Ping S59 (4-PW) WEDGES: Ping MB (54 ), Titleist Vokey Design Spin Milled (60 ) PUTTER: Scotty Cameron for Titleist Newport 303 BALL: Callaway Tour i Take a look inside more PGA Tour winners' bags Following David Dusek on Twitter (Photo: Chuck Burton/AP)

Lucas Glover, Stewart Cink preparing for big equipment changes

AKRON, Ohio The winners of the 2009 U.S. Open and British Open have a lot in common when it comes to equipment. Lucas Glover and Stewart Cink both use a Nike SQ Sumo Tour driver, as well as the same Nike prototype putter and Nike CCi Forged irons. But Glover told me Tuesday on the driving range at Firestone Country Club that the grooves in the those irons will become non-conforming once the new groove rules go into effect on January 1, 2010. “I just don't understand it,” he said. The gentle shaking of his head and look in his eyes made it Glover is frustrated by upcoming changes. “We've been progressive for a hundred years, and now we're backing up 20. I'm a little confused by it, but it's not my decision.” Both Glover and Cinklike most players on the PGA Tourhave started the testing process to learn how the new conforming grooves will affect their game. During the week of the Crowne Plaza Colonial in May, both Glover and Cink made trips to The Oven , Nike's club testing and development facility in Ft. Worth, Texas. “There's not much a difference when hitting shots from the fairway,” Cink told me on Tuesday. “But you definitely loose a lot of spin from the rough.” After he completed the testing in May, Cink wrote on Twitter , “New grooves next year mean 10% less spin from the fairway and 60-70% less spin from the rough with short irons. Players will use a softer ball I believe.” Cink, who switched this season to the Nike One Tour D ball from the Nike One Black ball, told me that he'd likely need to make another ball change next season too. So much for a quiet, restful off-season for these major champions. (Photo by Stewart Franklin/Getty Images)

Adam Scott Goes Back to a 2-Iron at Colonial

Colonial Country Club's golf course is not especially long by PGA Tour standards, and in the sunny and wind conditions, the fairways tend to play firm and fast. So Adam Scott has decided to put a Titleist AP2 2-iron into his bag this week. Interestingly, the 2-iron actually has a True Temper X100 3-iron shaft to make it feel more for added stiffness and control. Stay in the know by following David Dusek on Twitter .

Folks, your pal the Cheap Bastard has come up with a fool-proof plan on how to get you playing golf at some of the world’s most beautiful golf courses for less, and save the country from the scourge of illegal immigration, as well. Here’s what you do, set yourself up with a great golf travel trip to Mexico , and when you’re on the way down, grab an illegal alien and then toss them out when you get to the other side. If it turns out they aren’t illegal or aren’t from Mexico, so what. Let them sort it out, says El Bastardo. The U.S. has had to spend YOUR tax dollars sorting them out for years now. Let them throw some pesos at the problem. => Read more!
